PhD by Design conference at Leeds College of Art on 14th May

"The event was attended by 29 practice-based design PhD students and researchers from 18 different institutions where we explored different forms of dissemination for practice-based research. Through the day, we wanted to make space for tentative yet innovative ideas rather than gathering around polished knowledge and methods of dissemination. Everyone who attended, presented their work and contributed to the journal, creating a supportive environment for discussion and exploration."

I co-presented the Images in Practice Network that seeks to explore ways to publish and share practice based research for future researchers. I presented an account of how I've digitised my own practice based PhD exploiting freely available technologies and current social networking sites.

This ‘Instant Journal’ was created at the one day PhD By Design event at Leeds College of Art on the 14th of May 2015.

Talk to the Sussex Book Arts Group

I was invited by Dorry Smallman to give a talk about my work to the lovely folks at the Sussex Book Arts Group in Brighton at the Phoenix Gallery. I visited this morning and presented a selection of my artist's books and zines for the group to look through. We had a discussion about themes within my books and zines with particular reference to how satire and humour can highlight social issues. We also talked about production methods, papers, binding and how everyone hates their printer.

For more on the group visit their blog here...http://bookartsinsussex.blogspot.co.uk/

And thanks to Dorry Smallman the group's organiser for the following photos.

Ninth International Conference on the Book

Ninth International Conference of the Book- University of St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada, 14-16 October 2011.

I delivered the paper, “Art-Zines – The Self-Publishing Revolution: The Zineopolis Art-Zine Collection”.

As the curator of Zineopolis - Art-Zine collection at the University of Portsmouth, I set the aim of the collection to archive and reflect the diversity of thought and talent that exists outside the traditional publishing arena. The collection focuses on Art-Zines – examining the tactility and aesthetic of self-published materials. This paper introduces the Zineopolis collection and explores what constitutes an Art-Zine.

This paper is due to be published in the peer-reviewed Journal of the Book, by the end of the year.

We have a distinguished line-up of speakers, who are all keen to discuss the proposal that illustrators will only find creative satisfaction through self-expression and creating work that is meaningful to them, and not dependent on short-lived trends or dictates of the graphic design industry. The Symposium will take place at Pittville Studios, University of Gloucestershire, Cheltenham on Wednesday the 15 October 2008, and will coincide with the presentation ceremony of the second Cheltenham Illustration Awards."
